Egret Rookery

This June I found an isoloated island in a North Texas lake that shall remain nameless.  Early the next morning I slipped in with my sister and our cameras and captured an amazing egret rookery loaded with an astounding array of  cattle, snowy, and reddish egrets, gray, great, and blue heron, and even a tri-colored heron - every regional wading bird it seems except green herons.  We spent about 45 minutes creeping about the outskirts stealthily and slowly so as to disturb them as little as possible. At times there were as many as several dozen nests with hatchlings and chicks at various stages of development, the parents continuously departing and retuning from foraging missions around the lake and feeding their young.  The cacophony and odiferous aromas were stimulating to the senses to say the least.  What a way to start fathers day....
